To His Excellency, the Governor,
His Excellency has received your letter of this day's date, in which you request time to order the delivery of John Madson, either on board the "Reindeer" or the M.S. Steamer "Probation", on the ground that he was forcibly, and illegally removed. His Excellency is advised that illegality attaches to the proceedings taken in the case of the said John Madson, and therefore regrets that he cannot comply with your request.
You are also advised that neither Captain M'Clintock nor James Keenan, Esquire, United States Consul.
